This is the best restaurant for simple fare but they take it to a new level. Waitresses are friendly and polite and will do anything in their power to help you. The prices are very good and you ALWAYS receive a very large portion so if you go to this restaurant make sure that you have not eaten for at least 2 days.
Best fish tea in Edinburgh! Love this place! staff friendly, food great, service great, spotlessly clean! and good value for money!!
Often pop in here with the family after being at the museum or before a show at the Festival Theatre. Staff always very friendly and welcoming, decent, basic, no nonsense menu which is very reasonably priced. Service is excellent – even when busy and the toilets are very clean too.
The lentil soup was homemade, generous portion and delicious. My spinach and ricotta cannelloni was the best I have ever eaten. This is casual dining but quality of food and price it is an absolute must.
We were told this restaurant serves the best fish and chips in the city. We chose haddock and were delighted with our choice. The restaurant has been operating for a number of years which is always a good sign that they are keeping the public happy – and we would certainly recommend them. The batter was light, the fish moist and the chips well cooked and hot. A really great meal by which to remember Scotland.

This is the perfect sit-in chipper. Service is so friendly and efficient and the simple food is invariably tasty and cooked well. Value is unbelievably good. Highly recommended for a quick and satisfying meal.

My highlight was the Banana Toffee Cheesecake. I am a cheesecake fanatic you could say, so I have eaten many cheesecakes in my life, but their cheesecakes and desserts in general are just excellent!

It was filled to the brim with people had a lovely busy atmosphere downstairs but we sat upstairs which was lovely and calm, great friendly attentive staff… the haddock was the whitest tastiest fish I have ever had in lovely crispy batter, needless to say we devoured it all… excellent value considering Edinburgh’s prices, make the effort to walk the 10 mins along south bridge to get here you won’t be disappointed 10/10… will defo return when back in Edinburgh
The staff could not have been more accommodating and were very welcoming. This place has a great menu, with many types of food to choose from. House wine was lovely and the gammon steak was one of the best I’ve had. The chicken fillet burger was of a high standard too. The restaurant was buzzing, very busy, and lovely atmosphere. In fact, we were so impressed, we went back next morning for breakfast! Which, no surprise, was delicious. The mini cooked breakfast was lovely, not a hint of grease and very good quality sausage and bacon. The pancakes were light and fluffy, much like you’d get in the U.S. And the service was very friendly. This breakfast was £5 cheaper than eating in our hotel, and much better. City Restaurant also has a varied take away menu – I don’t think if I lived close I’d bother to cook at all! I will eat here again on my next trip to Edinburgh – even if I’m not going to the theatre, as it’s a short walk from the city and deserves every one of the five stars I’ve given it.
We found this family run restaurant by chance and then ate there three times during our stay in Edinburgh. The food was excellent quality and real value for money. The staff were really friendly and accommodating. The smoked haddock fishcakes and breakfast menu were exceptional
The pasta dish was lovely and hubbies fish & chips were magnificent. The side order of chips were way too much to finish but they were fabulous, home-made freshly cooked, I can’t recommend this restaurant highly enough… the staff were so very friendly. If we go back to Edinburgh we definitely return for another mea.
Simple, fresh and wholesome food. Not you average fish cafe but a pure delight. speedy and friendly service with a good range of choice . I love this place. Don’t pass by – you will be pleasantly surprised.
Came in here just the other week with my flat mate as we had a couple of hours to kill before a lecture. We were looking for something to eat which wasn’t too pricey as we were not exactly loaded with cash at the time, and that is exactly what we got! We were greeted very pleasantly by the lovely staff and had a choice of tables. We were highly impressed by the standard of the food, the vast selection of food and drink and how friendly the staff were! Great first impression and will definitely be back in the near future! 10/10
I have been a regular at this popular restaurant for the past eight years, whether dining alone, with friends and family, and even on the occasion of my fiftieth birthday! The food and warmth of the welcome are consistently good, as is the value of a majority of items on the menu – which has something for everyone. They use nothing but fresh ingredients and meals are always cooked to order. Best of all for me is the thick lentil soup, which is almost a meal by itself; the real home-made chips – no french fries or cheap imitations here: these are fat, fried potato strips at their best; and the D’Rollo’s ice cream – the strawberry and banana flavours being the best I have ever tasted, without any doubt.
We visited Edinburgh during the Christmas season and were pleasantly surprised with the food quality and attentive service at the City Restaurant. Great value for the $ paid. Exceptional Mochas! I had two they were so good!

Well well well what a diamond this place is… Right next to theatre so fab about 10mins walk (tops) from Waverley…so great location with a fab menu at really reasonable prices. The staff were great and really looked after us making sure we had a table upstairs near the window. Don’t walk by its a great place to eat just away from the hustle and bustle which in Edinburgh is sometimes worth the walk to get to.
I have been going to this place for years. I love it. Spotlessly clean, brilliant staff and great food. Went today for a good old Sunday breakfast you just can’t beat it.
